Series 1 of record group 63-12 consists of the general correspondence files of the Michigan Department of Conservation's Education and Information Division for the years 1908-26 and 1931-39. Includes: letters in, carbons of letters out, memoranda, reference notes, and, occasionally, printed pamphlets and brochures. Photographs collected to illustrate articles in popular and professional periodical publications are included in folders relating to land clearing. Includes appendix listing correspondents (1920-26).

The 1925 Clark-McNary Act expanded the provisions of 1911 Federal legislation creating the National Forest System (Weeks Law). It made it easier for the United States Department of Agriculture to buy land from those sellers whose property was located within the National Forest System.
